What is Solar PV?

Solar PV (photovoltaic) systems are a combination of solar panels and inverter, which together work to convert sunlight into electricity. If you are interested in the science, here goes….

Solar Panels are made up from semi-conducting material, normally silicon, and whether they are powering your calculator or your whole street, they are the same technology. When exposed to sunlight, the electrons in the atoms knock loose, flowing through the silicon and generating direct current (DC). This DC current is transferred from the panels to an inverter, which converts it to alternating current (AC), what we use in our homes.

Solar PV works on sunlight, the brighter the day the better your generation although it will work on cloudy days too.

Did you know that there is enough sunlight falling to earth every hour to meet the world’s power demands for an entire year!

How we work – Our Process

Not all Solar PV installers are the same! We’ve heard some horror stories over the years, with people calling us to fix issues that could have been avoided. Particularly, where poor quality materials are used or the installer went out of business without a third party warranty (which by the way is a requirement for MCS installers to provide on domestic properties EVERYTIME).

It is really important to ensure that this never happens to you!

All our design work is carried out in-house, where we look at the best materials, most favourable position for the panels and carry out calculations for the best generation.

All our installations are carried out by experienced Solar PV qualified electricians employed by us.

Once the installation has completed, we provide you with a 12-month workmanship warranty, a 2-year insurance backed warranty, plus the material warranties. This is all provided in a full ‘Handover Pack’ which is full of information for you to retain and refer back to should you need to.

Storing electricity – Batteries

Do you generate large amounts of electricity from your existing Solar PV? Or plan to install a large system?

Batteries could be the way forward for you…

Solar PV Batteries store excess electricity that the panels generate, which can be used at anytime – which means if your system is large enough you could become nearly self-sufficient.

Designing and installing batteries requires consideration of many variables, including the amount you generate, the location of the installation, the times you need power, discharge rate and load. If you are considering installing batteries, make sure you get full calculations first!

Solar PV for New Builds

On top of all the amazing benefits of Solar PV for the property owner; such as free energy, ease of maintenance and increasing property values, installing systems on your next development has some great additional benefits to your business as developer and house builder:

  • Easily meet renewable quotas
  • Improve marketability providing energy efficient properties
  • promote your green credentials, making you a more attractive supplier

Involving a Solar PV installer at the outset will save you time and money.

Our design process starts with either the architectural plans or a site visit, there are lots of factors that are taken into account to ensure the installation meets all the planning and client needs.

Once the installation has completed, we provide you with a 12-month workmanship warranty, a 5-year insurance backed warranty, plus the material warranties.

Frequently Asked Questions

u

How long do Solar Panels last?

Most of the manufacturers of the panels offer a 25 year performance warranty, which states that production will not fall by more than 20% during that period. Panels, as long as installed and maintained/cleaned, should last 20-30 years.

What are the benefits of installing Solar PV?

Solar PV turns the sun’s energy into usable electricity for your home or business. Cut your carbon footprint; It is a green renewable energy, meaning there are is no harmful carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Cut your electricity bills; Using the energy generated means you are not drawing from the grid, saving money against your electricity bills.

u

Does my Solar PV installation need maintenance?

There are no moving parts in the solar panels, so they need very little maintenance. However, it is always worthwhile to get any electrical installation in your home checked if you have any concerns. The Solar Panels work best when they are clean, so if they are in an area that cuases build-up, we recommend a professional clean once a year.
u

How big should my Solar PV System be?

The size of the solar array is mainly dependant upon the area you have available, that is in the premium position for generation, the amount of electricity you want to generate and what you are investing. On average, we install 3kWp to 6kWp systems on domestic properties (8-14 panels).
